Hair Dye Answers

I’ve recently dyed my bleach blonde hair to a medium brown (successfully) but I want hilights. I know I will have to wait a few weeks & condition excessively, but as for the hi-lights, I do not want to use bleach AGAIN over the previously bleached, now brown hair, because it will turn white, lifeless, grey toned, etc.
Can I hi-light this hair with just a permanent blonde dye? Will it work?
