Artificial color will never lighten artificial color. It's like taking a yellow crayon & going over black crayon. Nothing happens. You have to bleach your hair to a blondish color first & then dye back over that with the brown. As a hairstylist, I wouldn't recommend it. Instead, if you have to do it yourself, maybe just leave the black & bleach out the tips. Make sure that if you are going to do something else dramatic to your hair, you're gonna need some serious shampoo/conditioner to keep it healthy. Putting your hair through too much at once can get it dry & have bad texture. Ask whoever is doing your hair what they recommend for damaged hair. you are gonna have to bleach it.
